A Smooth Plan for a Festival Full of Clogs

A festival full of clogs (aka wooden shoes), crowds, and community pride needs a plan that keeps everything moving smoothly. Touch of Dutch in DeMotte brings 10,000 to 12,000 visitors to Spencer Park for a full day of entertainment, food, family activities, a car show, parade, and fireworks.

This year we partnered with organizers to create a portable sanitation plan that supported the festival layout, anticipated crowd activity, and worked around the many moving pieces behind this one-day community celebration.

THE CHALLENGE

Planning Before the Crowd Arrives

More than 50 portable toilets and sinks had to be delivered and positioned within a two-hour window. Three truckloads of equipment needed to move through the park before vendor traffic, temporary fencing, parked vehicles, and road closures limited access. Every location had to be determined in advance so crews could unload efficiently without interfering with the rest of the festival setup.

OUR APPROACH

We reviewed the festival layout to identify where guests would spend the most time and how activity would shift throughout the day. Food vendors, entertainment, family activities, the car show, and other gathering spaces were considered when recommending restroom locations.
Working alongside organizers, we reviewed the event footprint, expected gathering areas, food vendor locations, accessible routes, parking, and delivery access. Those conversations helped determine where equipment could serve guests without creating obstacles for vendors, emergency personnel, or event staff.
Delivery timing was coordinated around festival setup so equipment could be installed before vendor traffic, temporary fencing, and parked vehicles reduced access throughout the park. By completing placement early, organizers had one less operational detail competing for attention during final preparations.
