Before the Gates Open
For four days, ARC Music Festival turns Chicago’s Union Park into a destination for house, techno and electronic music. Inside the park, stages, vendors, production areas, pedestrian routes and thousands of festivalgoers share a compact urban footprint. Outside the gates, the festival is surrounded by Ashland Avenue, Lake Street, Ogden Avenue and Washington Boulevard. For event organizers, that makes portable sanitation a routing challenge as much as an equipment decision.
THE CHALLENGE
A Festival With Little Room to Spare
Union Park covers less than 14 acres, bordered by Ashland Avenue, Lake Street, Washington Boulevard and Ogden Avenue. That puts ARC inside an active Chicago transportation network rather than an isolated festival ground. As stages, fencing, vendors and production equipment move in, available space shrinks and access routes change. Portable sanitation has to be planned around what the park will become, not simply what it looks like during load-in.
