As a Driver Manager, you’ll be responsible for managing the driving staff at our Gary, Indiana branch. This branch employs more than 80+ drivers throughout the year. In this role, you’ll serve as the glue that holds the team together by developing team members to make sound decisions, offering varying perspectives, bridging disagreements, and providing energy and caution unique to everyone’s situation. Additionally, you’ll ensure we’re meeting quality standards, adhering to the union contract, navigating the team through difficult situations, and overseeing the overall morale of this vital team.

Working closely with our Dispatch Manager, you’ll need to strategize best approaches for completing large amounts of work within strict time constraints. You’ll then need to communicate the plan effectively to team members by sharing important details, reminding of company policies/procedures, and ensuring they have the knowledge and tools they need to succeed.

Responsibilities

  • Developing 1:1 relationship with each team member to develop trust and meet retention goals
  • Assist Dispatch Manager in developing weekly work schedules
  • Monitor labor needs and communicate to Recruiting and Operations to ensure a proactive staffing strategy
  • Ensure we’re following union contract and provide feedback to team members and administer discipline as necessary
  • Collaborate with HR team to reduce turnover, grievances, and unemployment expenses
  • Oversee vacation/time off requests to ensure adequate coverage is maintained
  • Closely monitor DOT Hours of Service, ensuring each team member remains compliant
  • Review accident/incident reports with drivers then create action plans when needed
  • Perform regular check-ins with drivers, reviewing performance and offer coaching as needed
  • Oversee quality assurance program which utilizes route inspections, driver observations, and general customer complaints

Requirements

  • For Hire endorsement or a Class B CDL is required
  • College degree preferred, industry experience a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong attention to detail are critical to this position
  • Ability to coach, develop, and motivate with a positive attitude and staying patient
  • Adaptable mindset, ability to continually prioritize and adjust plans in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to occasionally work nights and/or weekends as needed
